Resolution

This error indicates the login system is detecting a Friend account being used. Friend accounts are U-M guest accounts with very limited access. Student resources, such as the U-M email or the Housing portal (among other resources), require a uniqname account for access. To resolve the issue, try the following steps:

  1. Go to Wolverine Access.
  2. Click the Sign in option in the top-right.
    • If the page automatically loads and displays your personal email address in the top-right, this indicates the system is defaulting to the Friend account. In this case, Sign out of the Friend account and then navigate back to Wolverine Access and click Sign in again.
  3. When you're prompted for login, enter your uniqname (3-8 letter username, all lowercase) and complete the login process.
    • You can confirm the uniqname login on Wolverine Access when it displays your first name in the top-right.
  4. After logging in with the uniqname, try accessing the student resource (that was previously giving the error message) again.

If Wolverine Access seems to be stuck on the Friend account login or the FriendCheckDenied error persists after logging into Wolverine Access with the uniqname, you'll need to clear certain browser data to force a complete account log out - see Clear Cache and Cookies (Temporary Internet Files) in Multiple Browsers. If it's not convenient to clear browser data at the time, you can use another browser or an incognito/private browser as a temporary workaround.
