Okta Sign In, multi-factor authentication (MFA), uniqname setup
Issue
Enroll in Okta multi-factor authentication (MFA) for newly created uniqname accounts starting February 25, 2026.
Resolution
Most new students and employees enroll in MFA during the uniqname setup process. However, if you skip MFA enrollment, you will need to complete it the first time you sign in.
For best results, complete these steps on a desktop or laptop computer with your mobile device nearby.
Enroll in MFA During Uniqname Setup
- The final step will have you click Set up Okta Multi-Factor Authentication.
- Scan the applicable QR code to download the Okta Verify mobile app onto your mobile device. Alternatively, open the app store on your mobile device, search for “Okta Verify”, and install the app.
- Ignore any prompts in the mobile app and close it for now.
- On your computer, click Continue.
- Scan the QR code that displays, or click the link to send a link to your mobile device via SMS (note that your mobile device must be capable of receiving SMS messages).
- If you scanned the QR code, skip to step 8. If you chose the SMS option, enter your phone number and click Send SMS.
- Click the enrollment link in the text message. If prompted, tap Allow to permit the Okta Verify app to open.
- Follow the instructions in the Okta Verify mobile app to complete the setup process.
Enroll in MFA If Skipped During Uniqname Setup
It is strongly recommended that you enroll in MFA using the Okta Verify mobile app.
If you’ve purchased an Okta hardware token from the ITS Tech Shop, it will automatically be enrolled for you, but you must have it in your possession before you can sign in with it. Contact the ITS Service Center if you have purchased, but not yet received, your Okta hardware token and need to sign into U-M services.
