Google: "Sorry, you have exceeded your sharing quota" Drive Error

Summary

This article provides information on the following error in Google Drive when sharing/transferring ownership of files/folders: "Sorry, you have exceeded your sharing quota."

Body

Environment

U-M Google, Drive

Issue

While trying to share or transfer ownership of files/folders I own, I receive an error telling me I've "exceeded [my] sharing quota." This prevents me from sharing/transferring ownership of more files/folders in Google Drive.

Resolution

  • You may receive the following error when sharing or transferring ownership of a lot of Drive files/folders within a short period of time: "Sorry you have exceeded your sharing quota."
  • The sharing/ownership transfer limit is not advertised by Google to prevent abuse of their systems.
  • The limit is in place to prevent Google Drive accounts from spamming other accounts with shares or ownership transfers within a short period of time.
  • You should wait at least 24 hours from the time you first encountered the error to allow Google's spam-detection systems to reset before trying again.
  • We recommend limiting the number of files/folders you share or transfer ownership of at one time. Breaking the shares/transfers into chunks spread throughout the day should help prevent the error from disrupting your workflow.
