Summary

This article provides information on Zoom Opener files that may download to your computer when joining a Zoom meeting from your computer.

Body

Environment

Zoom, desktop app

Issue

A suspicious file with a long, randomly named filename starting with "zoom_cm" was downloaded when joining a Zoom meeting. What is this?

Resolution

  • Although the "zoom_cm[X].exe" file may be alarming, it is not a virus or threat to your computer.
  • These files are known as "Zoom Opener" files and are downloaded when attempting to join a Zoom meeting when the Zoom Workplace desktop app is not installed, or when it is otherwise detected as installed on the computer.
  • They are also downloaded when the "Download Now" link on the Zoom meeting launch page is clicked.
  • Running Zoom Opener files will install the Zoom desktop app and subsequently connect you to the Zoom meeting you were attempting to join.
    • If the desktop app is already installed, running the file will open the app and connect you to the meeting.
    • After running the Zoom Opener file and joining the meeting, the file will automatically delete.
      • In some cases, this deletion process may not occur, and the file will persist on the computer. These files are specific to the Zoom meeting you were attempting to join and will not work after the meeting concludes. As such, you can safely delete these files.
