Issue

SiteImprove, the University's current automated accessibility checker, has a free browser extension available. This plugin is useful for reviewing single pages. Unlike the full version of SiteImprove, it will not allow you to track accessibility progress over time.

Resolution

The extension can be downloaded from the SiteImprove Browser Extensions page. There is no cost and no limit to the number of installations. Once installed, it can be run from the Extensions function in your browser.

When the extension comes up, it will look like this:

SiteImprove main screen. See description below.

The interface has two tabs, Issues and Design Kit:

  • The Issues tab provides a list of accessibility issues (if any) that the extension found on the current page. You can click on each Issue to get a more detailed explanation with links to remediation information. A pull-down menu above the issues list allows you to filter out results based on conformance, difficulty of resolution, likely group to resolve, and element type.
  • The Design Kit has tools to manually check additional issues that cannot be handled effectively by auto checkers. These include checkers for colorblindness, color contrast, heading structure, and alt text.

Note that the checker will not work with Canvas or other applications that don't use a standard HTML structure.
