Grant App Permissions on macOS Privacy Settings

Summary

How to grant applications access to your mic, camera, screen and files on MacOS

Body

Environment

macOS with Security & Privacy settings for app permissions

Issue

I am unable to use certain features in an app on my Mac, such as screen sharing, microphone, camera, or file access. The app is not functioning correctly because it lacks the necessary permissions.

Resolution

To grant an app the required permissions on macOS, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Apple menu and select System Preferences (or System Settings on newer macOS versions).
  2. Go to Security & Privacy and select the Privacy tab.
  3. Choose the permission category you want to modify, such as Screen Recording, Files and Folders, Microphone, or Camera.
  4. Unlock the pane by entering your administrator password or using Touch ID if prompted.
  5. Check the box next to the app to grant access or uncheck it to revoke access.
  6. For Screen Recording and some other permissions, you may need to quit and relaunch the app for changes to take effect.
