Issue

  • Does U-M provide mobile 5G/LTE WiFi hotspots for those working at home or traveling?
  • Does U-M provide internet service or other networking services off campus?
  • Does U-M provide free or paid internet / WiFi services to the homes of employees and students?
  • Does U-M reimburse for internet at home?
  • Can ITS fix my home WiFi?

Resolution

Mobile WiFi Hotspots

  • Generally, U-M does not provide mobile WiFi hotspots to students. Individual schools and units may have other arrangements; students may inquire with their department.
  • Faculty and staff may work with their units to purchase mobile WiFi hotspots for off-campus use via Procurement.
  • Hotspots are not permitted for use where ITS networking services are available.
  • The U-M Net Hotspot service is different - it provides a stationary (desk-sized) router for use in locations where U-M Net is not available. It requires a power outlet, but provides higher capacity and is more reliable than a mobile, rechargeable battery-powered hotspot from a cellular carrier.

Internet / WiFi Services

  • U-M ITS operates in-building networks (WiFi and wired Ethernet) for the U-M campus, as noted in the coverage map.
  • ITS can provide networking services to off campus University properties where a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot is insufficient. Departments can inquire with their ITS Infrastructure Project Manager.
  • See Improve your home internet for ITS's recommendations on how to troubleshoot internet and WiFi problems and improve your off-campus connectivity.
