Requesting SendGrid Account via ITS Web Hosting

Body

Environment

A university website that needs to reliably send transactional and/or regular emails, especially websites hosted on Pantheon at U-M or another cloud-based hosting service that does not provide reliable outbound email services.

Issue

Need to request a SendGrid account for email integration.

Resolution

To request a SendGrid account, follow these steps:

  1. Submit a ticket to ITS-Web Hosting.
  2. Include the following details in your ticket:
    • FQDN of the site
    • Shortcode (at the current time, the shortcode will only be used to verify legitimate university business use plus billing for certain plan add-ons if you request them)
    • An MCommunity group for service communication
    • List of uniqnames for users needing administrative access to create email integration API keys
  3. Once your account is provisioned, access the SendGrid dashboard at sendgrid.com.

Additional Information

For more details on using SendGrid and managing API keys, visit the SendGrid documentation at https://sendgrid.com/docs.

If you have -- or previously had -- a SendGrid account that is different from the university-wide SendGrid account that uses your U-M email address for logging in, you will need to change the email address before you are able to log in to the university-wide SendGrid account.  This is because the university-wide SendGrid account uses U-M Weblogin (Single Sign On) rather than SendGrid's authentication options.  The solution to change the email address on your original SendGrid account to be something else.  This can be an MCommunity alias for your U-M email, an MCommunity group address, or a non-UM address.  Once the email address for the previous SendGrid account is changed, your UNIQNAME@umich.edu email address will become available to use with the university SendGrid account in conjunction with web Single Sign On.

If you are using SendGrid with a university website hosted on U-M Pantheon, then once your SendGrid account is provisioned, continue with the instructions for your website type:
