Issue

Dropbox rolled out a new user interface/experience for U-M Dropbox on the web on November 17, 2023.

Resolution

While this list is not exhaustive, significant updates include:

  • Your Home view is now replaced by the All files view.
    • New Dropbox interface showing updated left navigation and folder tree, as well as the new action bar and file view.
  • Updated grid file view with hover-over quick actions.
    • The folder type is listed under each folder in Grid view. Before, you could only tell by the folder icon.
    • New Dropbox interface, zoomed in on four folders in Grid view with a red box around their folder types found under the folder name
  • Updated left navigation with an expandable folder tree.
    • You can no longer tell what type (i.e., private, shared, Team, external) each folder is from the left navigation. You have to look at your folders in the All files view to determine its type by using the folder icons.
  • New action bar at the top of the page.
    • Includes an updated Create button and other common actions like Upload.
    • New Dropbox interface, zoomed in on the new action bar options including Create, Upload, and others
  • New edit and adjust toolbar in image/video previews.
    • New Dropbox interface, image preview showing new edit toolbar at the top and new adjustment settings to the left of the image
  • New dark mode that will automatically turn on/off to match your default computer OS settings.
    • You can toggle dark mode on/off within your account settings: Click your profile picture in the top right corner, hover over Theme in the drop-down menu, and select the option you'd like.
    • New Dropbox interface in dark mode, everything is the same except the interface colors

Additional Information

  • Dropbox does not have an article that details every change in the new user interface. However, you can review the Using the Dropbox website article in their Help Center for a quick overview of the new functionality.
  • This change should only affect the web interface. The mobile and desktop interfaces should remain the same.
