Can't Upload Files to Dropbox via Dragging and Dropping

Summary

How to go about fixing issue where you can't drag and drop files into Dropbox

Body

Environment

Dropbox web interface via Chrome browser

Issue

When dragging and dropping a file into Dropbox via the web interface, the file is not uploaded and you get an error message stating, "Unable to upload <file name> Empty files cannot be uploaded."

Resolution

The best fix for this problem is to clear the browser's cache "for all time" to clear out files that are causing this error.

Because clearing your browser cache for all time can be disruptive, you can test this before clearing the cache:

  • Log into Dropbox (dropbox.umich.edu) using a private or incognito browser.
    • Verify you are using your U-M uniqname and UMICH password and that a password manager is not auto-filling different credentials.

If the file can be dragged and dropped in a private or incognito window, clearing the browser's cache will most likely fix the issue.
