Zoom: Pre-Assigning Breakout Rooms in Canvas

This article provides instructions for the different methods available for pre-assigning breakout rooms in the Zoom LTI Canvas app.

How can I pre-assign breakout rooms in Zoom through my Canvas course?

Resolution

Note: For pre-assigned breakout rooms to work correctly, all participants must be signed into the Zoom account that matches the email address associated with their room assignment (i.e., most often their @umich.edu/U-M Zoom account). Learn more about potential issues when pre-assigning breakout rooms.

In Canvas, there are a few ways to pre-assign Zoom breakout rooms:

• Import a CSV
• Use the built-in assignment tool to create rooms and assign students
  • Auto-import of the course roster is only available for Zoom LTI 1.3.
• Import course groups (Only available for Zoom LTI 1.3)
  • Learn how to create a course group in Canvas.
  • Each group will populate its own breakout room with the students in that group assigned to the breakout room.
