U-M Google, Google Voice
Issue
- Can I create a Google Voice number using my U-M Google account?
- Why can't I access Google Voice with my U-M Google account?
Resolution
Google Voice is a "Voice over IP" (VoIP) service that provides a virtual phone number to manage calls, texts, and voicemails. It includes both a free consumer and a paid Workspace version.
U-M Google Workspace accounts do not have access to Google Voice or use its associated features. If you would like to use Google Voice, we recommend using a personal (non-UM) Google account. However, sensitive university data should never be used with non-UM accounts.
If you want a service similar to Google Voice for university business use, refer to the ITS Telephone page for available purchase options for your unit.
Additional Information
You should never attempt to transfer a personal Google Voice number (from your @gmail.com account) to your U-M Google (@umich.edu) account. It should fail, and if it doesn't, we cannot transfer the number back to you, as the university doesn't have the ability.
