Issue
What are these Automated Image Recognition Keywords, and where did they come from?
Resolution
On every asset in the Digital Asset Collaborative (DAC) system, there is a metadata field called Automated Image Recognition Keywords. This field is populated by an artificial intelligence scanning tool called Clarifai, which is a third party tool integrated with our system (per the request of our U-M Marketing / Communications / Media Production community). A few minutes after an asset is uploaded into the system, Clarifai scans the image and updates this field with certain keywords it detects from the image. It also detects dominant colors present in the image.
On rare occasions, the tool fails to populate the image recognition keywords immediately after the upload of an asset. To address this, we have established a special 10:00 pm process to find any assets uploaded in the last 24 hours that have no image recognition keywords, and scan those images to populate the applicable keywords.
Asset Experts in the DAC system have the ability to edit these keywords, as necessary (i.e., remove specific words or blank out the entire field, if deemed appropriate). For example, when preparing portals of assets for viewing by others, an Asset Expert may not want this metadata visible.
Note: if an Asset Expert wants to 'completely blank out' the automated image recognition keywords for particular assets, they must wait until the day after the asset has been uploaded to do so. Otherwise, the special 10:00 pm run of the tool will re-populate them.
Additional Information
If there are specific words appearing in the Automated Image Recognition Keywords field that may be offensive or misunderstood, a request can be made to have the word(s) blocked from appearing on future asset uploads. Please make a request to the ITS DAC Service team and they can address the removal of those words.
