U-M Google, classic Google Hangouts, Google Takeout

On November 1, 2022, Google will turn off access to classic Google Hangouts on the web. On January 1, 2023, all data will be purged from Google's systems, and the service will be shut off. If a user would like to keep an archive of their classic Hangouts data, they can use Google Takeout before January 1, 2023, to do so.

To export and download your classic Google Hangouts data:

  1. Go to Google Takeout (and sign in to your U-M Google account if applicable)
  2. Click Deselect all
  3. Scroll down and check the box for Hangouts
  4. Keep scrolling and click Next step
  5. Select where you’d like to transfer your Hangouts data from the Destination drop-down

Note: If you choose to transfer to a third party, such as Dropbox, you will be asked to log in and give Google permission to copy your files there.

  1. Leave the default options selected for Frequency and File type & size and click Create export (or Link accounts and create export if transferring to a third party)

This process can take a long time (possibly hours or days) to complete. You'll receive an email when your export is done.

Reminder: You have until January 1, 2023, to export and download your Hangouts data before it is purged from Google's systems.
