Dropbox Paper Not Permitted for PHI / Adjusting Notifications for Sensitive Data

Environment

Dropbox / Dropbox Paper

Issue

Dropbox Paper cannot be used with Protected Health Information (PHI) or HIPAA-regulated data.

Resolution

PHI is not permitted for use in Dropbox Paper, please refer to the Dropbox Sensitive Data Guide for more information.

By default, notifications are turned on after the FIRST use of using Dropbox Paper. This sends notifications by email when changes are made. These notifications include content from the document. To stop this from occurring, all users who will be working with non-PHI sensitive data that is allowed in Dropbox Paper must do the following:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.umich.edu
  2. Click your profile picture or grey circle in the upper-right corner
  3. Click Settings
  4. Click the Notifications tab
  5. Under Paper, uncheck all of the boxes
  6. Your changes will automatically save

If done correctly, your notification settings for Paper should all be unchecked and look like this:

Notification settings with all the options unchecked (left blank)
