U-M Box Migration Window Time Frames and Extensions

U-M Box, U-M Dropbox

Note: The Box Retirement Project ended on November 14, 2021. This article is meant as a reference to explain what the migration windows were during the migrations.

What is the migration window for moving from U-M Box to U-M Dropbox?

IMPORTANT: All extensions end on October 31, 2021. There are no exceptions that will be made. If a user would like to migrate after October 31, they can access the tool, and it will add them to the queue immediately. They have until November 14 to migrate. After that, all migrations end.

ITS and Unit Ambassadors have communicated to Shared Account key owners and will continue to communicate when the migration window from U-M Box to U-M Dropbox opens for individual accounts for each unit. When the migration window opens for a unit, faculty and staff will have 45 days to schedule their migration. If they have not scheduled their migration within 45 days, we will assume these accounts are not in use and deactivate the accounts accordingly. Once the accounts are deactivated, they will be inaccessible. If their Box account is deactivated, they can follow the steps below to reactivate the account. (The extension process reactivates the account.)

To request an extension for your account:

  1. Go to the migration tool: https://migrate.dropbox.umich.edu/
  2. Click to schedule your migration or submit the request for an extension by clicking "extension request" from the notice on the tool homepage
    1. Please note it can take up to 24 hours for the account to reactivate after requesting an extension
You will be able to submit an extension for your Shared Accounts and individual accounts using the steps above.

Two weeks before the window for migration closes, you will have the option to submit a request for an extension of your U-M Box account after the 45-day migration window. This request is made by going to the migration tool and clicking on the extension request. The first extension is 30 days. Additional extensions can be requested through the migration tool and each extension after the first 30 days is a 5-day extension.

Note: The extensions start from the deadline date, not when the extension is requested.

If you still have to schedule migration of your Shared Account and individual account, you will see messages similar to the ones below:Two extension request messages that appear in the migration tool when you are two weeks out from the window closing. They are red text with red highlight. Text of both reads: "Your [INDIVIDUAL or SHARED] migration window expires on [DATE]. You may submit an extension request."

IMPORTANT: If you click the extension request a second time before the initial 30-day extension expires, you will have to start requesting an extension every 5 days
