U-M Free Access Is Not Working or I Am Being Asked to Pay

Environment

Michigan Online, Coursera, edX

Issue

You are a University of Michigan Student, Faculty, Staff, or Alum who believes you should have free access but Coursera or edX is asking you to pay or is not recognizing your U-M affiliation.

Resolution

This usually happens when you open the course from the Coursera or edX homepage instead of beginning enrollment through Michigan Online.

  1. Return to Michigan Online and open the course or series page.

  2. Find the Enrollment section.

  3. Select U-M Free Access.

  4. Sign in with your U-M uniqname and password.

  5. Create or connect your Coursera or edX account when prompted.

  6. When you return to Coursera or edX later, sign in using the account connected to your U-M access.

If the course still is not free

Most non-credit open online courses featured on Michigan Online are free to U-M students, faculty, staff, and alumni, but exceptions apply. Some courses are designed only for specific U-M students. Courses that belong to degree programs and some certificate programs may also require payment because they can lead to U-M credit.
