If you are using Canvas for some of your assignment submissions, but still want to use GradeCraft as your primary grade management system, you may wish to import assignments into GradeCraft. If you have Canvas and have
Canvas integration set up, you can import the assignment name, due date, and number of points the assignment is worth directly into GradeCraft. If not, you may upload a CSV to import the assignments.
Note: For non-UM instructors, the assignment import requires an institutional-wide integration, meaning it's not included in the standard licenses. If you wish to be able to import assignments from Canvas, explore the Institutional-wide Canvas integration license option here.
Import from Canvas
From the GradeCraft course:
- Click "Assignments" under "Coursework" from the left-hand menu. Expand the "Coursework" folder if needed
- Verify that you have assignment types set up - You must have created assignment type categories already for this to work successfully.
- Select "Options" in the upper right hand corner
- Click "Import Assignments" from the dropdown
- Click "Import Canvas Assignments"
- At the top of the next page, you'll see a dropdown list that includes all of your associated Canvas courses. Select the course you'd like to import assignments from. The table below should populate with all of the assignments listed in this Canvas course. NOTE: You have to be the Teacher for the Canvas course for this to work. A GSI/TA will not be able to do this unless their role in Canvas is set to Teacher. You will only be able to import assignments that are published in Canvas.
- Check the box for each assignment you'd like to import
- Select which assignment type you'd like them to be stored under.
- Click the "Import select assignments into [ your course name ]" button
- GradeCraft will provide a page describing all successful items imported, and note any errors encountered.
Import from past GradeCraft courses
If you are a returning user of GradeCraft and are teaching a course in a different semester, the easiest way to set up your new course might be to import contents from the GradeCraft course from past semesters. Keep in mind that the following steps will import all contents of the past course.
Import from a past course to an existing course shell:
Note: This works best for courses that are already linked or created in Canvas. Follow these steps if you are working from Canvas
- Go to the main instructor dashboard where you can see all your courses
- Locate the new course you just created in the Unpublished Courses section on this page
- Click on the three dots in the bottom right corner of the course window
- Click "Import"
- Select the course you wish to import from
- Hit "Import Course"
Create a new course with pre-populated contents from a past course:
- Go to the main instructor dashboard where you can see all your courses by logging in at https://gradecraft.com/
- Locate the course that you wish to import from
- Click on the three dots in the bottom right corner of the course window
- Click "Copy"
- This will create a copy of the course. You may edit the copied course normally.
Import by uploading a CSV
To import multiple assignments that do not live in Canvas nor in a past GradeCraft course at once, you may import a CSV file with their information to achieve this. When creating your CSV, make sure you have the following header information in order OR download this template.
- Name
- Assignment Type - If the Assignment Type does not match one that is currently in the course, you will be allowed to select from an existing or create a new one
- Point Total
- Description
- Purpose
- Open At
- Due At - format: "mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss am/pm (e.g. 01/01/2017 10:10:11 pm)"
- Accepts Submissions
- Accept Until
- Required
Note: Please verify your file's format before uploading. The file must be in a .CSV (comma delimited) file format.
Once you have your CSV ready, you may head to GradeCraft to upload it:
- Click "Assignments" under "Coursework" from the left-hand menu. Expand the "Coursework" folder if needed
- Select "Options" in the upper right hand corner
- Click "Import Assignments" from the dropdown
- Select "Import Assignment from CSV"
- Attach the CSV file
- Modify the information in the table as needed
- Click "Import"
