Analytics available to students

As an instructor, you can give students information about their relative standing.  Learner analytics can help students understand their position in the class relative to the class as a whole as well as their achievement on an assignment relative to the class as a whole.  However, even if learner analytics are enabled, they do not reveal specific student information and if there are less than 20 students in the class, no analytics will be shown.

Analytics will not show students their "rank" in a class like a leaderboard.  They are intended to help students see how the entire class is progressing through a course.  For example, assignment analytics help a student understand that he or she may not be alone in struggling with a topic or assignment.  The dashboard box plot can keep students on task in classes that provide students with a lot of autonomy.

Note: analytics are always available to instructors but have to be turned on for students to see. 

 

 

To enable analytics 

  1. Click "Course Settings" under "Setup" from the left-hand menu. Expand the "Setup" folder if needed
  2. At the bottom of the page of "Basic Settings" page, click the check box next to "Analytics."

Once analytics are enabled (and the minimum number of students are in the course), you and your students will see a box plot on the course homepage/dashboard. 

 

To read course analytics

The box plot shows the student's score, and some general descriptive statistics for the class as a whole.  The box plot does not show the grade, but rather just the number of points that individuals in the class have earned.  The box plot can help students judge whether they are keeping pace with the class without revealing student information.

To understand assignment analytics

In assignments, there are also analytics that will display to students illustrating how a student achieved in relation to others that have also completed that same assignment.  Students will see how many other learners completed the assignment, and their achievement in relation to others who completed the assignment.  No specific student data or standing is revealed.

First, ensure that student analytics are enabled.
