Lettersmith Canvas LTI Advantage Setup Guide

This guide provides step by step instructions for connecting Lettersmith to Canvas via LTI Advantage. To complete the integration you will need additional information provided by the Center for Academic Innovation and Admin access to Canvas. If you have not received the LTI URLs please contact Lettersmith-support@umich.edu for more information.

Registration

To begin registration of Lettersmith as an LTI Advantage tool go to Admin from the left navigation and select the account for integration. From the Account Admin area, you will need to create a Developer Key for Lettersmith.

From the Developer Keys menu add an LTI Key.

Redirect URLs, OpenID Connect Initiation URL, Target Link URI, and JWK URL will be provided in a separate document.

Configuration Method: Manual Entry
Key Name: Lettersmith
Owner email: Lettersmith-support@umich.edu

Suggested Title and Description:

  • Lettersmith
  • Lettersmith is an online tool that uses the collaborative expertise of a writing community to provide personalized guidance tailored to meet students' needs and help them achieve their writing goals. It can be used to educate students on how to write in various styles and improve their writing.

JWK Method needs to be set to Public JWK URL.

Under the LTI Advantage Services submenu, we require “Can retrieve user data associated with the context the tool is installed in.” enabled for user enrollment management.

Under the Additional Settings submenu, we require Privacy Level to be set to public to allow for account creation on launch for users not pre-enrolled by the instructor.

Placement

There are two placement options that work for Lettersmith, Course Navigation, and Link Selection.

When using the Course Navigation placement to access Lettersmith the user will be taken to the Lettersmith  Dashboard where they can enter any template they have access to.

When using the Link Selection placement to access Lettersmith instructors will be asked to specify exactly which template they want students to have access to. When students enter Lettersmith from this link it will automatically enroll them into the template and take them to the template dashboard. *This is our recommended placement.

If you want to utilize the Link Selection placement you will need to change the Message Type to LtiDeepLinkingRequest from inside the Link Selection submenu.

Once you have completed registration you will be presented with a Client ID in the details column (directly above the Show Key button). We will need that Client ID to begin the integration process on our side.

Deployment

Lettersmith can be deployed per course or per Canvas account. The process is the same but begins from different locations.

If you want to add Lettersmith to your account you can do that from Settings on the same account that you added the Developer key.

If you want to add Lettersmith to a course in your account you can do that from Settings in the course.

In Settings, you add an App under App Configuration.

After selecting App Configuration you will need to change the configuration type from Manuel Setup to Client ID. Enter the Client ID that you shared with us earlier and install the application.

Lettersmith will be available in your selected placements on your next reload.

Client ID

To complete the integration we need you to provide us with the Deployment ID for your Lettersmith Deployment.

You can get this by clicking on the gear next to Lettersmith in the App Configurations menu in Settings. If you are deploying Lettersmith to a specific course you will need to share Deployment IDs and course names with us for each individual deployment.

Once you have shared your Client ID and Deployment ID with us your part of the integration is complete.
