Types of Study Abroad Programs

What types of study abroad programs are eligible for financial aid?

The University of Michigan is a national leader for students studying abroad. There are many different types of experiences you may consider as part of your educational experience at U-M, many of which are eligible for financial aid. Global Michigan is a great place to start your global engagement experience.

Financial aid may only be used for study abroad experiences that count towards degree credit. It is important to make sure any program you are considering will earn you credit towards your U-M degree requirements if you are hoping to utilize financial aid for the costs.

Study abroad programs can be classified in a number of ways, including

  • UM-sponsored programs: Generally, these are programs that you apply for through U-M's M-Compass portal. These programs are curated by University of Michigan faculty and staff to ensure you experience the highest quality education while abroad.
  • Non-UM programs: If U-M does not offer the program you are interested in attending, or if you decide to study abroad through a different university or private agency, you may still be eligible to receive limited financial aid as long as the credits will transfer back to your U-M degree. In general, only federal grant and loan aid (if you qualify) is avaialble for non-UM experiences. If you are thinking of participating in non-UM program, contact us to discuss the plans and the aid request process.
  • Short-term study abroad programs are type of UM-sponsored program that is shorter in length than a standard term and require enrollment for the course during the preceding winter term or following fall term. Travel in these programs generally takes place over spring break or during the summer. Some examples are Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates (GIEU) and Global Course Connections (GCC). You can find more programs and information on M-Compass.
