Amount of Aid Available for Studying Abroad

Body

Will I get more aid from the Office of Financial Aid if I study abroad?

In general, financial aid for studying abroad is similar to what you receive while you are studying on campus. The type and amount of financial aid you are eligible to receive depends on the study abroad program you choose.

If you enroll in a UM-sponsored study abroad program, you continue to be eligible for many of the same federal, state, and institutional aid programs you are considered for during a standard term in Ann Arbor. Note that out-of-state students attending non-tuition paying programs may see a change in their existing aid for the experience due to cost differences between nonresident tuition at U-M and the study abroad program fee.

Depending on the cost of your Study Abroad program, the aid you receive may not meet your full demonstrated financial need. To cover the gap, you may choose to apply for a departmental scholarship, a Study Abroad scholarshipfunding from M-Compass, a private scholarship, or a supplemental loan. If you have questions, email our office.

Students choosing to participate in a study abroad program not sponsored by the University of Michigan will have limited aid eligibility and should Contact Us to discuss this further.
