Am I required to pay a SEVIS fee and, if so, when and how do I make the payment?
Students applying for F or J visas with the initial I-20 or DS-2019 forms issued are required to pay the SEVIS fee (also known as I-901 fee).
You should pay the fee before you go to your visa interview at a United States embassy or consulate. The SEVIS fee payment does not have to be completed until you appear for the interview. You can schedule an interview before you make the SEVIS fee payment. Allow at least three business days for the payment to be received and verified.
Students should bring the SEVIS fee receipt when they apply for their visas.
To pay the SEVIS Fee, visit FMJfee.com. Currently the SEVIS fee is $350 for F-1 students and $220 for J-1 exchange visitors.
A video, available on the Study in the States website, walks students and exchange visitors through the steps of paying the I-901 SEVIS fee by payment in U.S. dollars by credit card on FMJfee.com, or by check, money order, or Western Union. The tutorial also provides stakeholders with important information regarding their application status and the ability to print their I-901 SEVIS fee payment receipt.
Frequently asked questions about the SEVIS fee can be found on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website.
