Test-optional Policy for SAT and ACT

Body

Am I required to submit an SAT or ACT score with my admissions application?

For the 2025 application cycle, U-M will be test optional. Prospective students will have the choice to submit standardized test scores (ACT/SAT), if they desire, as part of their application, but will not be penalized for not doing so. Advancement Placement (AP) scores, International Baccalaureate (IB) grades, and predicted results or other international credentials will be considered in context with the academic record, regardless of whether or not test optional is chosen. For additional information, please view the "Testing" section on the Application Changes webpage.

We will have a test-optional question as a part of the U-M questions on the application, and your response to that question will indicate your intent to apply or not to apply as a test-optional candidate. Applicants who do not wish to have SAT or ACT scores considered as part of their application review can still submit other optional forms of testing such as AP or IB exam scores, and these scores may be self-reported. Early Action candidates will be evaluated using the initial response to the test-optional question on the application. However, Early Action applicants who have been postponed and Regular Decision applicants may change their test-optional choice as long as this request is received prior to Feb. 1.

If you choose to have your test scores considered in our selection process, you may have your ACT or SAT scores submitted electronically directly from the testing agency to the University of Michigan Office of Undergraduate Admissions (U-M ACT code is 2062; SAT code is 1839). U-M no longer requires the ACT's Writing test nor the SAT's Writing and Language test.

You may also initially self-report your tests scores on the application or by going to Enrollment Connect and clicking on the "Report New Test Scores" button under the "Application" section. However, if you self-report scores and are later granted admission and enroll, you will be required to have official scores sent directly from the testing agency to our office in order to validate your self-report submission.

All self-reported and/or official test scores must be received by Nov. 15 for Early Action consideration and by Feb. 1 for Regular Decision consideration.

Please consult with the appropriate testing agency to determine when your official test results will be available for uploading by the University of Michigan. SAT offers a RUSH electronic mailing option, and ACT offers a PRIORITY electronic mailing option, both of which are acceptable.

Scores for SAT or ACT tests taken in the January of the application deadline year will generally arrive after our Feb. 1 application deadline. Since we review late applications on a space available basis, all the spaces for the incoming class may be filled by the time the January test results have been received by our office.

It does NOT disadvantage an applicant to send all of their available test scores to U-M.
