Transfer Selection Process and Timeline

How are transfer admissions applications reviewed? When can I expect a decision?

All applications must be complete before they will be reviewed. The required components of a transfer application can be found on our Requirements & Deadlines webpage. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions reviews transfer applications for the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) and the College of Engineering. To contact our transfer team, please email oua-transfers@umich.edu.

U-M considers many factors in the transfer review process. Academic performance measured by college GPA and strength of curriculum are some of the most important factors, along with personal characteristics and demonstrated interest in transferring to U-M. Transfer applicants must be in good standing, both academically and behaviorally, at the institution(s) that they have attended. LSA and Engineering have different curriculum guidelines, and so we encourage you to visit the admissions website.

The University of Michigan is not able to admit large numbers of transfer applicants due to high levels of undergraduate retention, and therefore admission to each one of the undergraduate schools and colleges is competitive. Successful candidates will usually present a distinguished record of college study, earning a cumulative grade-point average of B (3.0) or better. Our most competitive students are those who have taken a challenging curriculum in college, have performed well in their classes, and who would add to the excellence of our student body.

U-M is aware that transcripts will include variable teaching modalities in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years. Students will not be disadvantaged if they received pass/fail or credit/no credit or other COVID-related grades during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years. Each academic record will be reviewed for curriculum selected, academic rigor, and academic performance within the context of all courses where grades are available and coursework pursued.

The turn around time for release of admission decisions for transfer applicants who submitted complete applications is as follows:

  • Winter applicants can expect to receive an admissions decision by mid-November.
  • Spring, summer, and fall applicants can expect to receive an admissions decision by early April.
