2024 First-year and Transfer Application

How can I apply to the University of Michigan?

All first-year and transfer applicants follow the same basic steps to apply to U-M. First, you need to fill out and submit electronically the Common Application. We do not have a paper application. The 2025 application will be made available on Aug. 1, 2024.

You will also need to complete specific University of Michigan essay questions in addition to those required by the Common Application.

View the U-M admissions webpages for first-year applicants and transfer applicants to find all the information you need to submit an in-depth, complete, and successful application, including requirements and deadlines.

If you have attended any institution of higher education (on any basis, for any length of time) following graduation from high school, you will need to apply as a transfer applicant and submit official transcripts from all of the colleges that you have attended. If you are admitted into the U-M, you will have the option of not using your previous colleges' credit to satisfy graduation requirements from the University of Michigan.

Conversely, if you are applying as a non-traditional student who attended high school more than five years ago and who has not taken any college courses, you will be applying as a first-year applicant and will need to have your high school records sent to our institution.
