How do the data science degrees awarded through the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and through College of Engineering differ?
The data science major is a rigorous program that will provide students with a foundation in those aspects of computer science, statistics, and mathematics that are relevant for analyzing and manipulating large complex data sets. Students can earn a data science degree through either the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) or the College of Engineering. Specific program requirements can be found in the guides below:
In addition, there are differences in the general requirements required of all LSA or College of Engineering students in order to get a degree from their respective college as follows.
- To earn a bachelor's degree, Engineering requires 128 credits and LSA requires 120 credits.
- The LSA degree is a Bachelor's of Science (Data Science) and the College of Engineering degree is a Bachelor's of Science Engineering (Data Science).
- LSA students can more easily double-major with other LSA departments, whereas Engineering students can more easily dual with other Engineering programs.
For further information, consult the LSA Department of Statistics webpage or the Data Science (College of Engineering) webpage.
If you are a current student and still have questions about which program is best for you, please feel free to contact the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Undergraduate Advising Office or the LSA Statistics Undergraduate Advising Office.
