Is there a foreign language requirement for applicants?
First-year applicants to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) are strongly encouraged to take four years of foreign language study prior to applying to U-M, but only two years of the same language are required for admission (American Sign Language is included).
Transfer applicants to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts are not required to take college foreign language courses in order to be admissible; however, due to the demonstrated language proficiency graduation requirement, it is highly encouraged. Please be aware that the foreign language graduation requirement cannot be fulfilled by out-of-residence credit that is elected after the student has begun degree enrollment in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts unless the appropriate language department has approved that plan in advance.

A student whose first language is not English and who attended a high school where English was not the language of instruction is considered to have met the requirement.
