European Credit (ECTS) Conversion to U-M Credit

How does the University of Michigan transfer credit for courses evaluated by the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS)?


Most Western European countries have moved to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). This system was developed by the European Commission to provide common overseas procedures for recognizing studies completed within participating countries within Europe.

Credit hours for ECTS units do not equal the number of hours for the same course taught at the University of Michigan.

In ECTS terms, 60 credits represent the full time load of an academic year of full-time study, and 30 credits represent the full time load of an academic semester of full-time study. At the University of Michigan, this would equal 30 U-M credits for a full-time academic year, and 15 U-M credits for a full-time academic semester.

To calculate ECTS credits into U-M credits, multiply the ECTS credits times .5 (or divide in half). Here is a guide to help determine how your ECTS credits will translate into U-M Credits:
