First-year Recommendations

Which recommendations are required for first-year applicants?

The following required recommendations must be submitted by the application deadline in order for a first-year application to be considered complete:

  • One Teacher Evaluation sent by the recommender. We encourage applicants to have a letter of recommendation submitted from a core academic teacher (math, English, science, social science, and foreign language), preferably one who instructed the student within the prior 12 months. However, the teacher evaluation may come from someone other than a teacher ( but not a parent/guardian, grandparent, sibling, or other relative) who can speak directly to the student’s academic aptitude, potential, and performance in the classroom. This might include a community-based organization educator or academic support program professional.
  • School Report submitted by a counselor or principal.

We strongly encourage electronic submission of all documents through the Common Application. If recommendations are unable to be submitted online, they can be emailed to ecredentials@umich.edu (file size of attachments cannot exceed 10 MB) or mailed to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the following address:

University of Michigan
Office of Undergraduate Admissions
1220 Student Activities Building
515 E. Jefferson St.
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1316

Do not submit any extra documents unless specifically requested, as this may only delay your decision.
