How do I apply to the program in Dental Hygiene in the School of Dentistry?


Prospective Dental Hygiene program students who are new to the University of Michigan should complete the transfer Common Application and indicate Dental Hygiene program as their plan of study. Any current or former U-M student who wishes to transfer from one school or college on the Ann Arbor campus to the Dental Hygiene program should complete the Cross Campus Transfer Application.

The Dental Hygiene program starts in the spring of each year; students should apply by February 1 of the year acceptance is desired in order to receive equal consideration with other applicants. College transfer students applying for admission must present at least a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Applicants are encouraged to arrange an interview, the purpose of which is to acquaint the prospective student with the areas of study in Dental Hygiene and with the university campus. Email hygiene.info@umich.edu for more information.

Students enter the Dental Hygiene program as juniors: High school applicants desiring to spend their first year of study for the Dental Hygiene program at the University of Michigan should apply to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). All candidates must complete the equivalent of thirty-five semester hours of college level work in liberal arts. The thirty-five semester hours must include:

  • English composition
  • Speech
  • Introductory psychology
  • Introductory sociology
  • Chemistry (preferably with laboratory)
  • Anatomy & Physiology I & II or equivalent
  • Biochemistry
  • Microbiology

Suggested electives include Biology, additional English, or Literature.
