Question
How do I complete the international student check-in process?
Answer
All students with an initial I-20 must check in with the International Center. The check-in process is completed entirely online. To do so, follow these steps:
Note: these steps are for international students only. International scholars (J-1 research scholars, short-term scholars, or professors) will check in via the instructions sent by email.
Step 1: Arrive to the United States. If you have not yet arrived in the United States, please wait until your arrival to complete the remaining steps. If you recently transferred your I-20/DS-2019 to U-M or if you recently completed a U-M program and are starting a new U-M program, you are still required to check in even if you did not depart the United States.
Step 2: Complete the check-in course through Canvas. You must self-enroll in the Canvas course. See here to self-enroll: https://www.internationalcenter.umich.edu/events/student-checkin. This course requires reading through important content and completing 3 different quizzes. Please allow for at least 1 hour for completion of this course.
Step 3: Upload the required documents to M-Passport. Instructions are provided at the end of the Canvas course in step 2.
Step 4: Enter/update your U.S. address and phone number. More information is located here: https://teamdynamix.umich.edu/TDClient/127/Portal/KB/?CategoryID=1094. You must enter a U.S. address as both your SEVIS and CURRENT address types in Wolverine Access. To do this, go to Wolverine Access (https://wolverineaccess.umich.edu/) > Campus Personal Information > Addresses > Add a New Address > enter your U.S. address > OK > Select Current and SEVIS for address types > Save. To enter your U.S. phone number, go to Campus Personal Information > Phone Numbers > Add a Phone Number > enter your U.S. phone number (do not enter 1 or +1) > select Current Address Voice for Phone Type > Save. A U.S. phone number is optional for F-1 students but required for J-1 students.
