Lecture Capture with Kaltura

Lecture capture information for non-SPH instructors assigned to teach in a School of Public Health classroom.

This resource is for U-M Instructors not affiliated with the School of Public Health that are assigned to teach in an SPH classroom. We are unable to support scheduled, automated recording for non-SPH classes.  Instructors teaching a School of Public Health course should reference Panopto: Getting Started with Classroom Recording.

Setup

1. Locate and click the Media Gallery tool in your Canvas site.  If Media Gallery is not visible in your left-hand course navigation, see how to enable it. 
2. You'll revisit this tool after each class to share recordings with your students
3. The instructions below are for recording from the classroom computer in order to utilize the built-in video and audio equipment.   You can also record from a personal computer by installing Kaltura Capture:  (Note that classroom audio & video devices will not be available)
   • To install, navigate to your Canvas account menu
   • Click the 'My Media' option in the left-hand account navigation menu - this is your personal media storage
   • Click the 'Add New' drop-down menu and select 'Kaltura Capture' and follow the prompts to download

In the Classroom

1. Log in to the Classroom computer with your U-M Level 1 credentials to utilize the built-in camera and microphones in the classroom.
2. Use the shortcut on the desktop to navigate to Canvas; log in
3. Click your 'Account' located below the block M in the upper left corner to expand a menu of User options. 
4. Select 'My Media' 

6. Click the Create button on the right-hand side of the screen and select Capture to launch the installed recorder

7. The recorder will default to capturing the instructor screen, video, and classroom audio
8. When ready, click the red 'Record' button. The recorder will minimize into the lower right corner of the screen for easy visibility to pause or stop recording.
9. Begin your class
10. When ready to end the recording, click the square 'Stop' icon on the recorder - check the tool bar at the bottom if the recorder is hidden.
11. You'll be prompted to enter a name for your recording before clicking 'Save & Upload'
12. Once uploaded, you're ready to close all applications and use the 'Log Out' shortcut on the desktop if leaving the classroom.

After Class

Recordings made with Kaltura Capture automatically upload to your personal MyMedia library. This is available under your Canvas > Account menu. The steps below outline how to share a recording with your class.

1. Navigate to your course Canvas site 
2. Click the Media Gallery menu in the left-hand navigation
3. On the far right, click the '+ Add Media' drop-down menu
4. A list of your personal media recordings will appear - use the checkbox to the left to select one or more recordings to add to the course Media Gallery
5. Click 'Publish' in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.  If not immediately visible, refresh the screen to see the newly-published media.
