Rubrics on External Tool Submissions

Overview

Canvas does not allow you to attach a rubric directly to an assignment that is set as an External Tool submission type. However, there is a workaround to allow the use of a rubric to grade.

Workaround Steps

1. Create an assignment.
2. Set the Submission Type to File Uploads (or any other online submission type).
   
3. Set the remainder of the assignment details as desired.
4. Click Save (do not click Save & Publish yet).
5. Scroll to the bottom of the saved assignment page and click the + Rubric button to attach your rubric.
6. Once the rubric is attached, click Edit at the top of the assignment page.
7. Change the Submission Type to External Tool.
   
8. Select the tool you would like to use and follow the prompts to finish linking the tool to the assignment.
9. Click Save or Save & Publish.

Note: The rubric will no longer be visible to you on the main assignment page, but it will still appear in SpeedGrader where it can be used for grading.
