Kaltura - Download Caption File

Overview

The My Media tool in Canvas (powered by Kaltura) automatically generates closed captions for the videos you upload. If you need a readable copy of these captions, you can easily download the transcript directly from the media player.

Downloading a Video Transcript

Follow these steps to download the transcript file for any video in your media library:

1. Log in to Canvas and navigate to My Media. You can usually find this in the Global Navigation menu on the far left of your screen, or within a specific course's navigation menu.
2. Locate the video you want the captions for and click on its thumbnail or title to open the media playback page.
3. Click the Play button on the video player to start playback.

   Why do I need to press play? Starting the video activates the player's interactive controls and forces the transcript data to load. You can immediately pause the video once it starts.

4. In the top right corner of the video player interface, click the Show Transcript button (this icon looks like a small page with horizontal lines). Clicking this will expand the interactive transcript panel next to or below the video.
   
5. At the top of the newly expanded transcript panel, click the Options menu, which is represented by three vertical dots.
6. In the menu that appears, click Download current transcript.
   

Locating and Using Your File

Once you click download, a plain text file (.txt) will be saved to your computer's default downloads folder. Because it is a plain text file, it will not retain formatting like bolding or italics, but it can be opened by virtually any text editor (like Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac) and can be easily copied and pasted into Microsoft Word or Google Docs for further formatting.
