Anonymous Grading

Body

Overview

When creating an assignment, you can choose to set up an assignment with anonymous grading. Selecting the anonymous grading option hides student names from graders when they view assignment submissions in SpeedGrader.

Enable the Feature Option

Before you can use anonymous grading on an assignment, you need to make sure the feature is turned on in your course settings.

  1. In your Canvas course menu, click Settings.
  2. Click the Feature Options tab at the top of the page.
  3. Scroll down the list to find Anonymous Grading.
  4. Click the red X icon to the far right to Enable. The icon will show a green icon with a check mark.

Notes on grading:

  • The grading workflow is unaffected. You will still use SpeedGrader exactly as you normally would; the system simply swaps out student names for generic labels (e.g., Student 1, Student 2) until grades are posted.
  • Anonymous assignments automatically default to a manual posting policy. Grades for anonymous assignments are not displayed to students until assignment grades are explicitly posted.

Enable on an Assignment

Once the feature is enabled for your course, you can turn it on for specific assignments.

  1. In your Canvas course menu, click Assignments.
  2. Click the + Assignment button to create a new assignment, or click the name of an existing assignment and then click Edit.
  3. Scroll down to the Anonymous Grading section of the assignment settings.
  4. Check the box next to Graders cannot view student names.
  5. Click Save or Save & Publish at the bottom of the page.

Limitations

Limitations:

  • Posting grades removes anonymity: Posting grades for an anonymous assignment will permanently remove anonymity from the assignment.
  • No Graded Discussions: Anonymous grading is not currently available for graded discussions.
