Google: Transfer Ownership of a Calendar You Own

Environment

Issue

How do I transfer ownership of a calendar I own/created in Google Calendar?

Resolution

Note: You cannot transfer ownership of the primary calendar tied to your account (which includes Shared Account primary calendars). If you have events on your primary calendar that need to be transferred, refer to Google: Transfer Ownership of Calendar Events You Created.

To transfer ownership of a secondary calendar you own:

  1. Go to Google Calendar.
  2. Click My calendars from the left sidebar (if hidden).
  3. Hover over the calendar you want to transfer, under "My calendars" in the left sidebar, and click the three-dot icon.
  4. Select Settings and sharing.
  5. The individual you want to transfer ownership to must be shared on the calendar. If they are already shared on the calendar, proceed with Step 6. If they are not shared already:
    1. Click Add people and groups under the "Shared with" section.
    2. Enter the email address of the person you want to make an owner.
    3. Select Make changes and manage sharing from the "Permissions" drop-down.
    4. Click Send. Proceed with Step 6.
  6. Click the permission drop-down beside the individual you'd like to make an owner.
  7. Select Transfer ownership.
  8. Click Transfer ownership to confirm the transfer. (This cannot be reversed unless the new owner transfers ownership back to you.)

After you transfer the calendar to another owner, they will receive an email with a link. The new owner has 60 days to accept ownership, and you will remain the owner until they do so. (If they do not accept, you will remain the owner.) Once the new owner accepts the transfer, your permission level for the calendar automatically changes to “Make changes and manage sharing.”

Important things to note:

  • A secondary calendar is any calendar you create or that someone else creates and shares with you.
    • This does not include resource calendars, which are managed differently.
    • As mentioned above, this does not include primary calendars of individual accounts or Shared Accounts.
  • Only the current calendar owner can transfer ownership.
  • There can only be one owner of a secondary calendar.
  • You can only transfer ownership to an individual with a U-M Google account (and Calendar access). You cannot transfer ownership to an MCommunity group. However, you can transfer ownership to a Shared Account.
  • The individual must be shared on the calendar before you can transfer ownership to them.
