Dropbox: Recover Deleted Files or Folders

Environment

U-M Dropbox

Issue

  • How long do files/folders stay in trash after I delete them in U-M Dropbox?
  • How do I recover/restore deleted files or folders in U-M Dropbox?

Resolution

  • Files and folders that are deleted are sent to the "Deleted files" section in Dropbox (i.e., the trash).
  • Items sent to the trash will remain there until they are permanently deleted or the account that deleted them is permanently deleted after they leave the university.
  • Items that are permanently deleted cannot be recovered/restored.
  • Items in your trash do not count towards your 5TB storage limit.

To restore deleted files or folders:

  1. Go to U-M Dropbox.
  2. Click Deleted files in the left sidebar.
  3. Click on the name of the deleted file or folder you want to restore.
    • You can select multiple files or folders at once by clicking the checkbox beside each.
  4. Click Restore.

Restorations can take time if you’re restoring a large number of files. To view restoration status, click Restorations under "All files" in the left navigation.

Note: You can restore a shared file or folder only if you had Can edit access to it. If you have Can view access to a shared file, you won’t be able to restore it.
