Friend Invitation (Not Social Login) Expired or Timed Out

Issue

I tried to complete my Friend account request (to be able to login to Canvas) but received a message that the invitation expired. 

Resolution

The U-M Friend account system sends an email, with a link to complete the setup, that expire after 24 hours to reduce security risks. You can set up the Friend account again to have another invitation sent.

1. Request your U-M Friend account:

  1. Check the invitation to see what e-mail address it was sent to
    1. Use this address for your U-M Friend identity in the next step
  2. Follow these instructions to create your U-M Friend account; Set up a Friend Account. 

2. If you are invited to a Canvas course, this is how to login with your Friend account:

  1. Navigate to canvas.it.umich.edu
  2. Click on the "U-M Login" option
  3. When prompted to "Enter your Login ID and Password", use the Friend ID (your email address) and the password you created in part 1

If you signed into a Canvas course with a Social Login (Google, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter), and you are receiving the invitation expired message, please contact the ITS Service Center.
